Buffalo Soldiers: the 1896 Bicycle Brigade / by Andrew Sapienza

This is a great account of the early experiments on the possibilities of the bicycle. The US Army tested the viability of bicycles for modern warfare by sending the 25th Infantry regiment out of Montana on a 1,900 mile bike trip through the Rocky Mountains - carrying all their own gear (120lbs). Don’t worry, everyone arrived at the finish line in “good physical condition.”

I bet.

This gives me a whole new appreciation of the soldiers in Bob Marley’s song.
